책소개

“The reason I was compelled to write this book was because another regime is coming to an end. The people of Korea are starving for hope and I trust that times of despair will not be repeated…I think it is necessary to leave the history of President Roh Moo-hyun and the Participatory Government as objective lessons by providing various testimonies…Success depends on success, and frustration must be overcome by frustration. And with those desires, I started to write.”- Moon Jae-in, introduction of Fate, Destiny, and Moon Jae-in

For the first time, Moon Jae-in, the 19th President of Republic of Korea has written a testimony of how former President Roh Moo-hyun and the Participatory Government was seen thrown his eyes, as a memorial to the former president’s passing.

The book is segmented into four parts, “My Encounter,” “My Life,” “My Companion,” and “My Destiny,” beginning with initial encounter with Attorney Roh Moon-hyun. They first met as attorneys specializing in labor and civil rights law, continuing not only as political partners but friends. This book records their thirty-year friendship, the behind-the-scenes events that occurred and the scandal and hardships they had to endure together.

Born in Gyeongnam, Geoje-si in 1953, Attorney Moon Jae-in became a human rights activist and politician. He is a law school graduate of Kyunghee University. During his undergraduate years he led a protest against the Revitalizing Reformation and was consequently expelled and imprisoned for assembly and demonstration violations. He was again imprisoned in 1980for violating martial law. In 1982, he finished second in his class at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, but due to his record of previous infractions, he was declined for a judicial appointment thus relocating to the City of Busan where he began his undertaking as a human rights attorney. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, he served as defense attorney for the fire incident at Dong-eui University and conducted legal
proceedings for numerous cases including several for the State of Affairs Commission. In addition, his service record includes chairman for the Busan Regional Bar Association (human rights division) and representative and committee member for the Busan and Gyeongnam’s Lawyers for Democratic Society and Hankyore respectively.

As advocates for human rights along with former President Roh Moo-hyun their relationship began and transitioned into comradeship in Busan. With the inauguration of the Participatory Government, he served as the Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs at the Blue House, but because of failing health he resigned. However, when President Roh was impeached, Moon Jae-in quickly
returned and formed the defense council. In 2005, he returned to the Blue House and served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Society and Civil Affairs. Moon Jae-in served as former President Roh’s personal attorney, and after his death he coordinated all funeral related proceedings. He was the permanent and operational director of Roh Moo-hyun’s Foundation, the auditor for the beautiful Bongha Foundation and devoted his interests towards the President Roh Moo-hyun’s Memorial
Foundation. During the 19th General Elections, he ran for office in Busan Sasang-gu and was elected as a member of the National Assembly. As the sole candidate for opposition parties, he was the 18th presidential candidate. Since then, his service continued as the representative of the New Politic
Alliance for Democracy, and he presides as the head of the Democratic Party that lead the opposition party.
